Personal Achievement Award

Judy Bishop is the winner of the TVS Personal Achievement Award for 2007. Judy has been at TVS since 1978 and during that time she has steadfastly set goals for herself and moved towards those goals. She initially came to TVS after living at the Western Carolina Center. She first lived in the TADC Group Home but her goal was to live in her own apartment - which she did. When walking became more difficult, it was her goal to be as independent as possible and she gained the confidence to use a walker. When TVS began the Supported Employment Program it was her goal to get a job in the community and she did it.

Judy has been a valued employee of Sagebrush Steakhouse in Brevard for almost eight years. She receives the highest praises from her supervisor and co-workers for her work ethic and smiling face. When she first started she rolled silverware in the napkins but now she prepares all the appetizers for each evening’s meal. Her can-do spirit is an inspiration to the entire staff.

Judy has always wanted to be as independent as possible. So when the opportunity presented itself about two years ago to apply for a home loan through a HUD program, having her own home became her goal. Now she owns her own home and she and her sister live in the community of their choice.

One of Judy’s remarkable strengths is her ability to be persistent and patient in dealing with the bureaucracy. She never lets little things slow or get her down.

Judy never brags about what she’s accomplished and she shuns the spotlight. She has never been one to ask for help in anything she does. She has always wanted to do it for herself. She is very independent and self-reliant. But what she’s accomplished should be an inspiration to others. Her effort and determination to achieve her goals deserves this recognition. Buying a home is a remarkable accomplishment but even more so for someone who has overcome the challenges that Judy has faced throughout her life.

Lesley Smith earns CDL

We congratulate Lesley Smith on earning her commercial driver's license (CDL). She worked hard to master the "Big Rig" and everyone at TVS is very proud of her accomplishment.
